Creating Community in Christ – Carry

Where are we going?  And how are we going to get there?  Four months ago I began to give you a brief outline of how God is at work at Light of the Hills, and how we can grow together in Christ.  I get excited when I think what God is up to at Light of the Hills, so let’s keep learning and growing together.

Here is one way of describing what God does when He creates community:

  • He Connects with people, and He Connects people to each other.
  • He Cultivates people like a good farmer, growing them strong in His Word.
  • He Cares for them, and teaches them to Care for each other and for others.
  • He Carries the Gospel, the Good News to His people, and teaches them how to Carry the Gospel to others in daily life.

The Church is described in the Bible as the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12).  And like any living organism, the church is designed to grow. God has built into the very DNA of the Church the process of growing.  Consider how each of the Gospels ends with a mission emphasis:

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV)

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.  (Mark 16:15 NIV)

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:45-49 NIV)

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (John 20:30-31 NIV)

So as Jesus creates His Church, He creates it to grow, to live, to share the Gospel.  When we share the Gospel, we are simply doing what we were created to do.  Another way of looking at this is to realize that when we don’t share the Gospel, we aren’t living the way Jesus intended us to live.  Our growth is stunted, the Body isn’t healthy.

As God connects with us through mission and worship, and cultivates us in His Word in Bible study and devotions, He begins to teach us to care for Him and for others.  This care is ultimately expressed as we carry the Gospel to others, as we share the words of life given to us by the Lord Jesus Himself.

So what does it look like to live as healthy Christians?

  • Be connected to God in worship.
  • Let Him cultivate you in Bible study and devotion.
  • In love, care for others by praying for them.
  • By God’s grace, carry the Gospel of Jesus to others through your words and actions.
